| By Bryony Mellars and
Sapphire Clay Barker Year Eleven The School Council meets every fortnight on a Thursday lunchtime. We follow an agenda which includes the minutes and incorporating any new ideas that the pupils have had. For the past two meetings Mrs. Holland has joined us in order to see how we conduct the meetings and to bring any suggestions to improve our school life. Year Eight brought a long list of improvement suggestions for the school. This caused a great deal of discussion and it was agreed that it would be better for small groups to concentrate and research specific areas. Michael Parry, Alexander Peeters, Keanu Griffin and Haashim Bakht chose to concentrate on sport. Sapphire Clay-Barker and Bryony Mellars concentrated on uniform while Deborah Reid and Annie Healy concentrated on problems to do with toilets and changing rooms. Ben Pugsley and Sam Segurado concentrated on the Sixth Form tuck shop. Haashim asked if
the school could fund the purchase of a new basketball kit for the team
as it was previously bought by individuals. Mrs Holland suggested that
we ask a sponsor or alternatively the PTA to raise funds. We included a
plea for sponsors on the last school newsletter and already two
sponsors have come forward. Also an additional basketball hoop was
requested and this is being investigated.Bryony and Sapphire carried out research into the number of girls who would like the option of wearing trousers, skirts or tailored shorts throughout the school year. They asked all girls from Years Seven to Eleven what they would like to be able to wear. A sample pair of tailored shorts were displayed and it was suggested if an appropriate style was chosen then they could be made available from the uniform supplier. Since, Mrs Durham has agreed to letting the girls have the option of wearing trousers, tailored shorts or skirts throughout the year but said that the shorts will have to be bought from the school. Once the style for the shorts has been chosen they will be available from the school but this may take some time to organise. Mrs Durham has asked the School Council for more input about the uniform for the new school which we are looking into now. Annabel and Deborah reported back their findings on the toilets and the changing rooms and the list of problems that were brought forward have been given to Dougie. He is making it his priority to amend these problems. The Sixth Form tuck shop has been reviewed by Ben and Sam, who gave the Council feedback on their findings. New items have been purchased giving a better range in the tuck shop and the prices have been looked at and remain very competitive. Year Eight asked for a facility for hobbies at lunchtime and this is being researched. We are trying to find an appropriate place for the students to use. We have great success in all the areas the School Council has worked and we hope to have the same success in the future. Remember if you have any suggestions on how to improve our school please tell your class rep and they will bring it before the council. |
