Dressing Up for Carnival

By Dona Lesley

This year a record number of 96 children took part in the carnival parade in Loulé. Our theme, “Fantasy Fairy Tale,” came to the Key Stage 1 staff during a meeting when we were looking at a new dressing-up book that arrived before Christmas. Dressed as princesses, princes and knights, riding unicorns or horses and with their friendly dragon, they paraded down the Avenida.
It is always a challenge trying to find a suitable costume. We try and bear in mind the various weather conditions. Their outfits stood up to the wind and the few drops of rain that fell.
The children sang a Portuguese song on the stage and were applauded by onlookers. We won a trophy and a much needed CD and tape player which will be shared between Reception and Preschool. They all took home a party bag full of sweets, for participating, and streamers and confetti, given by the Câmara.
