Valentine’s Day Meet

By Hannah Kittel

On February 14th 2004 six schools from all over Portugal went to Vilamoura International School for a cross country meet. The participating schools were St. Dominic’s International School, St. Julian’s School, International Preparatory School, American School in Lisbon, Vilamoura International School, and São Lourenço International School. The runners were split up into different groups according to age. There were five different age groups and each had both a female race and a male race

In the Benjamins division the runners had to run 1 kilometer. In the girls’ race Charlotte Peet (Year 6) came in7th place and "Jo- Jo" Peet (Year 6) came in 8th place. In the boys’ race we had a team of four Year 6 boys; James Bell, Micah Kittel, Antonis Ikosipentakis, and Sean Player. This team came in 6th place.

In the division of "Infantis" the girl runners had to run 1.5 kilometers and the boys had to run 2 kilometers. We did not have any girl participants but we did have one boy, Sam Layton (Year 7). Unfortunately Sam was not able to finish the race because he tripped over a tree root and hurt his ankle.

In the division of "Iniciados" the girls were required to run 2 kilometers and the boys were required to run 2.5 kilometers. The girl’s team Elina Millere (Year 8), Emma Stevens (Year 8), Hannah Kittel (Year 10), and Hannah Kemish (Year 9) just missed getting 3rdplace by 2 points and instead received 4th. Sam Segurado was the only boy in this division (from our school) and came in 19thplace.

In the "Juvenis" division the girls had to run 2.5 kilometres and the boys had to run 3 kilometres. Charlotte Still (Year 11) came in 6th place and Rachel McDermott (Year 11) was not able to finish the race. For the boys’ race, Leigh Glasper ran but was also not able to finish the race due to a pulled muscle. There was a division after this, "Juniores", but there were so few participants, they ran in the "Juvenis" division. Although we did have a few injuries everybody ran very well. This year our school was only represented at this event with 16 people and next year we hope to have more.
