Mamamaratona
By Sam
The sunshine through scattered clouds on the morning of October 12th, not
the greatest news for those planning on participating is the Mamamaratona
3. Yet despite the warm weather there was quite a turn out in Silves that
morning. People were milling around the centre where the event would begin
and end. Among these people were students and teachers from EISL, our very
own, and among these people I stood. Of our students, many were the helpers
for the event, while others were running like me. Having done very little
training, I was a bit apprehensive, but eager none the less to see it through.
I had no doubt that the cause was worthy, the Mamamaratona being a charity
run or walk to raise money for a mobile breast cancer treatment unit. So,
after registering my name and pinning my number to my T-shirt I was ready
to warm up. Properly warming up the muscles is of course necessary to avoid
injuries. However the aerobic warm up did not appeal to me.
Some time after ten o’clock the run began. For the most part of the event
I stayed in the middle of the group, running up and down hills and around
corners. Dotted around the course were the students of EISL handing out water.
The eight-kilometre route, like all the others, ended at the starting centre
and as I finished I received a medal for my efforts. This was a part of my
P.E GCSE and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
