Senior 1 Trip to Silves

20/06/01

by Matthew F. S1

As you may have already heard, Senior 1 had a trip to Silves. We arrived up in Silves about 10:30 and the first thing on our schedule was to go into the castle and see the antique toy fair. We walked all around the top of the walls, we could see the whole of Silves and the countryside for miles. Inside the castle we saw a well, built by the Moors in the 8th Century, it was 40 metres down and about 14 metres wide and 10 metres deep.

After the castle the next thing we did was to go to the Fabrica do Ingles, which is a cork factory with English machines. We saw a film about how the modern and old ways were to make cork. Then we went around the museum and one of the old men there showed us how to make corks with the old machines. One of the fun things we did was to have a train ride around Silves.

After getting ice creams we headed back to the coach and had a good rest on the way back to school. When we got back we said it was a fun day but the coach ride was boring. I thought overall it was worth a visit and it was good to have Mrs Holland and Mrs Foreman on the trip as they could tell us about the history and geography of Silves.
