French Exams in Lisbon

05/02/01

On the 24th and 25th of January Mrs Flückiger and Lydia (L6) stayed in Lisbon to undertake the first set of examinations for the Diploma in French Language Studies which is administered by the Alliance Française. This is the official body in charge of promoting the French language and culture abroad.

In two days there were four written, three oral and two listening examinations to do, so it was a really intense experience. Lydia thinks that this truly helped her to overcome nervousness and does not mind if she did not manage to pass all of them. Mrs Flückiger was surprised about the high standards expected from the students and had to give up the idea to let S3 students sit these exams after three years of French.

"I think, it is a pity that we are so far away from France and therefore French often gets the image of an elite subject for Language freaks. Of course, it is more important to learn the language of the guest country you are staying in, but I still feel that the French culture has a lot to offer to European students."

So there are plans to go back again and it seems that our French teacher is determined to send many more students up to Lisbon to enjoy the experience of an intensive French course.
