Newsletter May 2007

Dear Parents,
Dear Parents,As we enter the final term of this academic year I can only reflect on what an incredibly busy time it has been so far and that this term will be no exception. The older pupils have begun their very important final session of IGCSE examinations and the Sixth Form students are concentrating on those vital AS /A Levels. Terry McGuire had a very constructive visit earlier this month when he met with staff, pupils, governors and some parents. I am very much looking forward to handing over the reins to him in September and to working with him as part of the school management team. The big event of the school barbecue is on the horizon and a date to put in your diary. Tickets will be on sale soon!
Kind Regards

Mrs Sam Durham
Acting Head Teacher

Important Calendar Dates

Fri 4th May Year 2 Assembly
4th to 8th June: Internal School Exams (Key Stage 1, 2 & 3)
Sat 16th June: School barbecue

Key Stage 1
Class Assemblies Year 1 performed “The Three Little Pigs” entirely in Portuguese. Pre-school and Reception class gave us lots of information about mini-beasts. Both performances delighted their audiences of parents, friends and pupils. Year 2 Assembly is this Friday at 2:15pm.
Key Stage 2
Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 gave assemblies on Deserts, Victorian Times, Riversong and David & Goliath, respectively. The hard work of both teachers and pupils resulted in some excellent performances on stage, which their audiences thoroughly enjoyed!. Year 6, together with Year 2, visited Omega Park Zoo in Monchique on 24th April and experienced a very enjoyable day.
Key Stage 3
In the last “Compal” 3 a-side basketball tournament the Year 7&8 boys’ team, played extremely well to achieve 1st place in the district, they now go through to the regional finals in Portimão. We would like to take this opportunity to wish Niklas Holmstrom-Forster, Joe Jones, Tom Kirke and James Harris every success and we are confident that they can go all the way to the Nationals.

Key stage 3 Assemblies

Assemblies this term are focusing on healthy life styles. So far this term we have looked at and discussed, nutrition and diet, including extreme dieting, bullying, including “new” methods of text or cyber bullying and health and drugs, including smoking and alcohol. The emphasis in all assemblies is to have the correct facts, know how to deal with problems or issues when they appear, know where to go for help and the main point of knowing how to stay safe and healthy. Later in the term we will be looking at exercise and health. Year 9 did a fantastic job of presenting the assembly on bullying and gave plenty of advise on how to deal with text and cyber bullying, which I think was very informative and useful.

School Books and Equipment

Could I take this opportunity to ask all parents to check at home if they have any school text books and if so return them to school and also to ensure that students arrive at school with all the necessary equipment, rulers, scissors etc. Please check the Key Stage guide for full details. It can be very disruptive and time wasting if students do not have all of the equipment needed. Beverley Stevens

Readathon – March 1st

A staggering €2000 was raised by our sponsored Readathon! This will enable us to extend and enhance the Reading Library for Key Stage One & Two children. Many thanks to everyone who helped and supported this event.

School trip to England

Mrs Holland and her Year 13 Literature group (and Charley Waite) travelled to Stratford upon Avon the last weekend of April to see King Lear at the Courtyard theatre. They also visited the three houses associated with Shakespeare and enjoyed the lovely weather!
